meeting meghan at work

The kid had a rough day at work on Monday so I pretty much came home from the airport, dropped my stuff, and made my way to meet her when she got out at 5. It will never cease to impress me that this is where she works. She'll send me messages like, "Oh i'm so tired i could just lay down right here in the Temple of Dandur" to which I have to reply, "oh i'm so tired i could lay down right here in the porno booth on 8th ave". Not quite the same ring to it.

But apparently she really did have a crummy day on Monday. In case you're not familiar the Met has had a bamboo structure on the roof this whole summer (the picture of Chelsea and her husband that they used in all the wedding announcements was taken underneath it). Well you can pay to get a tour where you walk up in to the bamboo structure, but it's free for employees of the Met if they make a reservation to go on a Monday. Apparently Meghan has been trying all summer to get a tour of the exhibit and finally got to. When she was at the very top she pulled out her cell phone to take a video (even though you are definitely not supposed to have anything like a cell phone or camera with you on the tour). She of course dropped it, it fell down through the many layers of the bamboo jungle before landing in an obscure rock garden on the roof of the Met. She had to send an email to some high up muckity muck at the Met asking him if he could ask the ground maintenance crew to rescue her phone. Apparently he wrote her back and cc'd all Met employees about how you aren't supposed to have electronics on the roof structure. I felt bad so I took Meghan out for tacos. If there is one thing Meghan loves, it's tacos.

Anyhow, I arrived a little early which provided for some quality people watching at one of the best people watching spots in the world.

And I do literally mean in the world. The Met attracts pretty much everyone, tourist or not. You hear so many different languages if you sit on the steps of the Met for long enough. Often it's just tourists walking past, taking pictures, or sitting on the steps while they look at a map. Sometimes when I'm sitting here waiting for meghan I think about how I'm one of those people that you see when you're a tourist and think, "wow, they live here!" and are so impressed. I wonder how many people just like me are sitting on the steps of the Louvre at the same time, doing the same thing, just hanging out waiting for a friend. I am trying to allow myself to remain amazed at my life, that I have friends who work for world renowned organizations whether capital or cultural.

It was also really surreal to have gone from driving in my sister's convertible only a few hours earlier to sitting on the steps of the Met waiting for meghan. I guess usually when I get home from the airport I just like to decompress, unpack and be home for a little bit, but I had energy for some reason and I felt bad about meg's miserable day so I dropped my stuff and headed right out.
that's just how glamorous my life is.
