dinner for 3

Meghan invited Craig and I over for the delicious dinner shown above. Parsley and tomato with a tahini dressing for the salad and a torte for the main course which had layers of potatoes, zucchini, squash, and delicious cheesy herby crumblies.

The best part was that Meghan had special jobs for each of us to do. My jobs were usually taken away from me because I couldn't quite grasp what it was I was supposed to do. I would just get too excited about something else and stop paying attention to what I was doing. That's how I cook, maybe it's not "technically" the best way to do it but I make it work.

Anyways, while waiting for food to be ready we had lots of fun activities to enjoy including Meghan regaling us with tales of the murderous squirrel that she scares away by banging spoons on her fire escape, or exploring the creepy haunted apt next door. We played scrabble and both of them ended up muttering curse words at me under my breath. I don't know why.

The final dish was the berry bars as seen below. I just finished my last one this morning, it was even better several days later after the berry goodness had solidified. But fresh out of the oven was pretty good too.
I love dinner parties at meghans, I will miss them. Maybe i'll just fly back weekly...

kayaking with my brother

While I was in Florida the last time my brother took me out kayaking from the point above on Philipi Creek in Sarasota. The reason it took me this long to post about it was because at one point in our kayak adventure we found ourselves in the middle of a...i should know this...school of dolphins? Pod of dolphins? I'm going to go with gang, esp after the amount of offensive remarks that came out of their blowholes. Anyways, the point is the camera on my phone takes way to long to focus and whatnot so I knew there was no way I could time it to take a picture right when one of them was coming up so I instead took a bunch of videos. I finally sat down and looked through them to try and see if I managed to capture anything. I didn't. But if you ever want to get really seasick just let me know, I have some videos I can email you.
But the Kayaking was really beautiful regardless. We went through all these really cool mangrove swamps, i tried to upload a video but blogger hates all my videos right now for some reason, so you'll just have to imagine it in your minds eye.

And we went under the bridge that you take to get out to the beach, which was cool. Going under bridges like this always make me think of when I was a little kid and we had a sailboat and sometimes it would be a drawbridge that would have to open just for us. Of course when you're not in a sailboat and instead in a kayak, it's a little more scary. You really get pushed around by the bigger boats and you can just see yourself getting tossed in to the massive cement pylons.

Besides all the natural beauty we also took the kayak back in to a couple of channels to check out some of the amazing homes. There was one house with a two story swimming pool that had a giant bronze lions head on the second floor pool that spit the water in to the first floor pool. tacky.

These houses are my favorites. If anybody wants to buy one for me I will send you details. Thanks
This one is on Siesta Key and is just down a channel. I think it's so nice and simple, it reminds me of something from Charleston or Key West. I really like this style, like something the european settlers would have built in the bahamas. Modest.
This house was on Siesta Key but bayfront property. The most absurd thing about it was that it looked like it was empty. Somebody owns this house and doesn't even care. This looks like an amazing hide and seek house. So many turrets!
And finally this house which looks like Jlo meets Basic Instinct. When we saw this house for the first time we saw it head on and it looked really small and insignificant. It wasn't until we were coming back that we saw it from this angle and realized how gigantic it is. It's got a solid two stories of windows!! It kind of looks like a library, but who cares.

And finally, of all rich people things we saw, this one was my favorite. Do you think it's really named after her?

some nice birdies

i'm sure this was supposed to be it's own epic post with tales from my childhood about the one who would paint a portrait of one of the others, but sadly these videos got lost in my phone and i only just discovered them tonight. I didn't want them to go to waste so enjoy.

showdown

Ariel's friend Ian has asked us to cat sit for his cat Weezie for a bit. I wasn't sure what to expect from the detective, I brought home a dog one night and he basically just stalked it while looking like a scary halloween kitty with his back arched and his tail all poofed out.

With this cat however he seems to have decided to go the "psychological terror" route. I frequently have come around the corner to find them sitting like this in various places. It seems like Weezie, afraid and uncertain about his new surroundings, will find a place to try and just be quiet and observe what's going on. But wherever he goes, the giant menace will find him and give him a stare down he won't soon forget.

Half the time I can't even tell which one is which because all I see from the darkness are two glowing angry eyes surrounded by a cloud of darkness. Nathanael also pointed out that we now have two male black cats named after fictional women on t.v.

my musical morning

I had a really funny morning with music. The first part of my morning was spent putting away my clothes from my suitcase and clearing the floor so I could do yoga. When I finally got everything away I went to the kitchen to make some tea before I settled down for my morning yoga.

When I returned to my room I walked in on a nice clean room with a handsome guy just snoozin' on the bed, and this was playing on my itunes:

It really was bliss.

So when I go to do yoga I'm rockin' along and i get to the point where i'm ready to do my first down dog. I usually hold the first down dog for as long as I can, and this morning my timing synched up so that a new song was starting and I decided to just try to hold down dog for the entire song. Here's the song that I had to hold down dog for:

Now at first I was like, "ok i can get down with this, nice inspirational, whitney come back, i get it" and I really got in to it. I know that whitney is talking about God but I like to think about it like "I look to you" meaning that I look to myself. That I think so often for me I am looking for other people to validate me or make me feel like i'm on the right track, but when it's just me by myself in my room trying to hold down dog for a whitney ballad, there isn't anybody that's going to help me but me. I literally have nobody to look to for help but myself, and when I really have to I will pull it together and help myself.

Of course by like 2 minutes in I was no longer thinking about how inspirational the song was, I was instead thinking about how it was written by R. Kelly and how he got caught on camera peeing on some underage girl. Classic.

And by 3:30 in to the song all I was thinking about was the burning in my shoulders and how I just wanted whitney to finish the damn song. In the beginning I was like, "ooooh good for whitney, she's back, she's singing a ballad, she's still got it" but by this point I was like, "omg whitney, it's over, let it go, you don't need to sing a whole other verse, we get it, just end this misery". I wasn't sure how close I was to the end but I knew she had to do one final attempt at hitting a strong note before she would sing several, "i look to you"'s while she faded in to the background.

When the song was FINALLY over I collapsed on the floor in to child's pose. There was a brief moment of silence and I wondered what the next song was going to be. It was beyond appropriate:

it was like, "you're right mariah, you were my sweet destiny, it was worth waiting through the shadows of that jank-ass whitney song, classic mariah, you are my vision of love". Also can we talk about how she's wearing a unitard?

Basically the moral of the story is that i listen to some pretty gay music.
