almost have a new car
Of course this is the dealership I ended up getting my car from. The mini/bmw/bentley/rolls royce dealership of Miami.
I was originally looking at mini's in Ft. Lauderdale where it was respectably the mini/bmw dealership. Mini was still on the low end but given that the dealership one town north is the mini/volkswagen dealership I didn't have any reason to expect that Miami would be this big of a price jump. They wouldn't even valet park my truck!
My awesome sales guy Rodney came in special just for me even though it was his day off so while I waited for him I decided to check out their inventory. Somehow I had been so dazzled by the super cars I completely overlooked this:
Allegedly it belonged to a stripper. The pink is covering white. It is definitely a hot car, I just think I would stick with the white. Almost everyone I showed it to has loved it, and I've been surprised by the people who think I would actually have bought that for myself. I bet it smells like Britney Spears perfume inside.
I did sign all the paperwork for my new ride while I was there, unfortunately there were too many pieces of the puzzle that had to fall in to place before I can drive it away. In the meantime, my truck continues to give me trouble, making me feel totally justified in spending WAY TOO MUCH MONEY on a really awesome new car. But really, just knowing that I can get myself to work and back is worth it.
My fantasy is that I will be able to take ownership of my new car tomorrow but I have a feeling it will more likely be Friday morning. Tomorrow morning will be consumed with transferring the title of my truck to Daniel before I have to be at work at 9.
These days are an extreme test in patience. As if I haven't been thinking about this and planning it for long enough, to be so close to the end is driving me nuts. Special thanks to Joe and Daniel for giving me rides to work in the meantime.
Speaking of, I need to go to bed. It won't be long before Daniel is rapping at my chamber door.

why didn't I think of this?
That plate would look way better on the back of the roadster. Grrr, shame on me for not thinking of this.
And since I can't get cat butt I'm already losing this battle. I feel the same way about choosing a tattoo. I can never come up with something clever on my own, just see what other people do and wish I were that cool. And they even got it with the endless summer plate! That's the one I have always wanted for the roadster:
It looks good against the black too. I've always thought it would be sharp on my car.
I've also always wanted this one:
But I feel like the endless summer looks the best on a convertible. The question remains, what should it say?
Suggestions are appreciated.

omg SO GOOD
So the much ballyhoo'd Triumphant has been released to listen to on mariahcarey.com and I do enjoy it, I do. ESPECIALLY because they mention being in a James Bond two seater beemer and while they are probably talking about this:
I am going to imagine that they are talking about this:
But back to Mariah. She released this song on her website earlier this week and then followed it up with the announcement that she had already done a remix as well.
And oh, its good, it's real good. I am definitely putting this on my running playlist, and by that I mean I am just going to put it on repeat for my entire run.
I'm also really excited that this song is so good because the hope is that it will become her 19th #1 single. I feel like everyone is so distracted at her 18 million dollar contract with American Idol that they aren't realizing it's all about publicity so she can finally get to the top of this list:
Most number-one hits
- The Beatles (20)
- Mariah Carey (18)
- Elvis Presley (17) (Pre-Hot 100 charts and Hot 100)
- Michael Jackson (13)
- Madonna (12) tie
- The Supremes (12) tie
- Whitney Houston (11) tie
- Rihanna (11)[25] tie
- Janet Jackson (10) tie
- Stevie Wonder (10) tie
source
I can't wait to see her first interview when she gets her 21st. "I don't know who the Beatles are". No, she would never, she'll come up with something amazingly classy to say I'm sure.
Like I said, I can't wait. In the meantime I am literally listening to this remix on repeat, and intend to for the rest of the day. I suggest you do the same.

I just noticed this
The roadster doesn't have a spare tire, both because there isn't space and because there are two different size tires on the car, so instead they threw this in the trunk. It's basically an air pump and then there's a can of spray sealant. Very James Bond.
So in all the times I've been in the trunk and seen this air pump I've never bothered to read what it says. It's that first sentence that I can't make any sense of.
"To be filled easily visible for the driver."
What? It's troubling because you get through most of the sentence feeling like it's going somewhere logical and then it all just kind of gets mucked up at the end. I am not filled with a lot of confidence by this, especially as it brandishes the BMW logo so brazenly. So this was clearly printed by BMW, do they not have proofreaders? Much less proofreaders, wasn't there anybody at the plant who read enough English to notice this and point out that it doesn't make any sense?
Speaking of, maybe one of you who speaks german can read the bottom part of that and tell me what the translation is trying to say. Perhaps it's just one of those lost in translation situations, there's no way to really capture what they want you to do with the air pump. Rest assured though, the tire will be filled easily, and it will be visible for the driver.

a roadster kind of day
It was too beautiful not to! Besides the fact that I hadn't driven it in a while I also wanted to take it out for a cruise before I headed out of town.
As fun as it is and as much as I love it, I've been thinking about letting it go more and more though. It would be such a shame if I had the james bond car for this long and Meghan never got to ride with me in it though.
Don't you think?

I actually save money!
Contrary to all the other aspects of owning two cars, when it comes to insurance it actually works to my advantage. Thanks to a sweet multi car discount my insurance is actually less than it was before. Not too shabby!
It's a little uncomfortable when I have to talk to Progressive and the person on the phone gets to the part where they see that I have two cars, each as pretentious as the other. That's why Jon needs to move down here and take one of them off my hands.
Then I can go back to having a normal, slightly less ostentatious, insurance card.

comfortable familiarity
I had to get the roadster back from Elliot yesterday so I could take it to the shop to fix the scars that Norland left on it.
Having taken two weeks off from driving it I had forgotten how fun it is. It's like a rocket ship! Heather was nice enough to take me down to Aventura to get it and then she followed me back up to Ft. Lauderdale. It was really fun anytime we were at a stoplight together, particularly when it turned green and I saw he getting smaller and smaller in my rearview mirror : p
Sadly I had to turn it over today so I will not be driving it again for who knows how long. He said they might have to order a new door from Germany. UNfortunately they won't be replacing the lock, which means I will have a new door with a still busted lock.
I think when I get the roadster back from this adventure, and once I've recouped my losses from buying the benzo, I am just going to get it tricked out. I have always thought about racing stripes, I think it would be fun to do the paint job from the toy versions.
Matchbox:
or Hot Wheels:
I like them both, Elliot said I would look like a tool if I got "roadster" on the door panel like that but I think if people knew it was from the toy they would appreciate it. But I also like the subtle M logo on the door panel of the Matchbox one too, I just don't know how it would look on black. Perhaps I should get a glittery silver paint job all around...
So many options.

pretty badass ride(s) Chace
I went out to my car yesterday and was delighted to find my other car parked right in front. I felt like Batman.
Apparently Elliot didn't even realize he had parked the roadster in front of the benz, which made the scene even better. They just belong together.
This makes me anxious to move in to a place where I can have both cars available like this. But for now I'm still enjoying the benz enough that I'm fine with Elliot having the roadster. My drive up to Sarasota yesterday was so luxurious. The only thing I need to figure out how to do is how to lower the volume of the woman who gives direction. I don't get why they wouldn't have it linked to the volume of the music but they definitely do not.
Otherwise though, it was a dream. And when I stopped for gas I realized that I finally have a car that I don't have to hunch over while I fill it up. That is luxury!

this is fun
Last weekend they were supposed to be fixing the dings and scratches on my car but thanks to torrential rains they weren't able to. I picked up my car on monday with a we owe for the things they couldn't do.
Which brings us to today, when they will be doing those things, and I will be driving this loaner. It reminds me of this last summer. Except in a lot of ways the 3 series was an upgrade from the roadster while this benz is a definite downgrade from mine. I'm actually enjoying it because it's making me love my car even more.
The weirdest thing is that the interior is almost exactly the same as mine except smaller. I feel like the roof is so close to my head, it makes me uncomfortable. I like the color though! It makes me feel like this:
Except for the fact that I am definitely not rolling in an SLS. It's still cool though, and I will say the handling is better than on my glk. But I love how comfortable my suv is, and when I want handling I can always take out the roadster. If I ever get it back from Elliot, though to be honest I've been enjoying that he's been joyriding in it. It's how that car was meant to be enjoyed, not commuting to the mall. That's what ostentatious suvs are for!
Yes Andrew, I know, I'm that guy. Shut up.

brace yourself
This is how he sleeps. Also note that his butt and tail would be extending well in to my sleeping area as well. Why does he have to put his paw on things like that? "Hold on guys, I just gotta take a snooze"
Speaking of bracing oneself, I am probably going to have to fill up the benz for the first time on my way home from work today and I am not looking forward to it. At least I've already been accustomed to premium gas but I assume that the benz has a bigger tank than the roadster. I don't think I've ever broken $50 in the roadster. I am scared to imagine what it's going to be for the benz.
I also haven't gotten a paycheck since wiring a huge chunk of change to mercedes benz of ft. lauderdale so I've been feeling very frugal lately. Of course, a new car comes with all kinds of unexpected new expenses, so I've still been running my card more than I would like to. It will be a long time before I can spend money on silly things that I want for no reason. Like an iphone.

a nice day for the roadster
I took the beemer out yesterday to get it some exercise as well as a good cleaning before I deliver it to Elliot. Who should I see on my brief journey but this guy. When he finally noticed me he gave me a very approving thumbs up.
I was reading old reviews about my car from back when it was new and the funniest was comparing my car to the hatchback version, as seen above. The author of the article basically said that the hatchback was a true driver's car while the convertible was more of a "hairdressers car".
WHATEVER.
As cool as that looks I'd still rather have the ragtop.

now THIS is luxury
You have no idea, the moment that I realized I could take my coffee with me to work, it was huge. It was also the moment that I realized Dan was right all along, you do need the lid to go with your tervis tumbler. I was a fool for doubting you, I apologize here for the record.
I am in love with my new car. I can't even begin to describe. As much as I love the roadster it feels so much more appropriate to park this in the mall parking lot.
My sister and I always talk about how so much of our experience with something is dependent on who we work with, especially for big ticket items like this. I will definitely say that even though Heather and I went to a bunch of places and had a lot of different cars in mind, it was working with Daniel at the Mercedes dealership here that made me feel good about getting this amazing car.
So my new project is to make a playlist featuring songs that reference Mercedes. Here's what I have so far:
"Got a new Benz the color of bacon bits" Hold Yuh - Nicki Minaj
"Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz" Mercedes Benz - Janis Joplin
"Boom boom baby pick you up in my Mercedes" Selfish - Britney Spears
"Think I wanna drive your Benz, I don't. If I wanna floss, I got my own" Love Don't Cost A Thing - Jennifer Lopez
"Smoke a L in the back of the Benz-y" Ride Wit Me - Nelly
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
I was also trying to think if my car was featured in any other pop culture references. I don't think mine has been specifically because this model is still too new and it's not really all that fancy or anything. But if you want to let me have some creative license I can say that they drove Mercedes SUVs in Jurrassic Park II:
I imagine if I ever get another cat this is the fate that will befall me when I leave them at home too long together to conspire. But at least I'll go out in style!
For now I'm holding on to my roadster, hopefully Elliot is going to be able to fix it for me and then I will figure out what I'm going to do with it. In the meantime I feel a little bit like this. My favorite part was the description of the Rolls' steering wheel that had melted off. I also thought it was interesting that the luxury car dealers were hoping that the cars would never get back on the market again.
At least I can comfort myself knowing that I'm not that ridiculous. But it does seem insane to look at two different keys on my counter. I told Eliza that I have finally realized my 8 year old dream. She seemed impressed.
SO COME VISIT PLEASE OK? THANKS!

how could I ever leave you?
Of course since I've been looking at new cars the following things have happened.
-Gas station attendant complimented my car.
-Old lady at pump next to me said, "well that's a beautiful little car". Extra points for her reminding me of my grandmother.
-Two teenage boys pulled up next to me in traffic and were freaking out over my car. They actually said, "I've never seen one in real life!".
-Two guys at the Cadillac dealership told me they were thinking about stealing my car if I hadn't come back to it.
-And then, the icing on the cake, pulling up next to this guy:
In the most serious and earnest tone I've heard in a long time he said, "I will never buy a different car than this".
I am inclined to agree.
But then...

car shopping...barely
I know, get rid of my car? How can I even consider it?! But it's true, I have been thinking about upgrading the car show to something with a backseat. It hasn't helped that my car has starting making a shrill high pitched whistling noise. Elliot said that it was probably that my belt was put on too tight which would make sense as that was the last mechanical thing I had done to my car so while it's not anything wrong with my car it sounds really terrible. Especially in the parking garage at work, I am so ashamed coming around the corner and having everyone looking to see who's janky car sounds like it's about to explode.
It kind of goes away after it gets warmed up at least but what's weird is that it will randomly make these kind of sing song noises while I'm driving and I literally have to turn down the mariah because I can't tell if it's the music or my car. It's weirdly always in the same range as her soprano.
So anyways, Heather went car shopping with me yesterday. I really just wanted to take a look at different things and maybe drive a few, no big deal. Heather wanted to take pictures of me in all of the different cars so I could post them for everyone to vote on which car I looked the best in. Unfortunately I only ever ended up test driving one car as NOBODY WANTED TO HELP US AT ANY CAR DEALERSHIP.
Well that's not entirely true, the man at the Toyota dealership pulled up in his golf cart and said, "afternoon ladies, can I help you with anything" at which point Heather doubled over in laughter and I said blankly, "no, thanks" which is when he realized that I was not a lady and said, "ok then, have a good day" and drove away.
Otherwise though it was impossible to get any help at any of the other dealerships we went to except of course the BMW one. I drove a really fancy SUV that was way out of my price range but it was so cool!! It had the key where you just keep in your pocket and the car just knows.
Feeling like we at least accomplished some part of our goal for the day we decided that we could go and have lunch. Heather took me to South Port Raw Bar for lunch which is apparently only for "in the know" ft. lauderdale residents so don't go spreading it around. As usual, Heather spent much of our lunch taking personal phone calls, so I decided to take pictures of her being rude and ignoring me.
Apparently Heather's friends don't believe that I'm real and many of my coworkers ask me what Heather looks like so I'm at least doing my part to prove I'm not making up friends.
And you can really get a feel for what it's like to hang out with Heather from these pictures. Namely, she ignores you while she talks to her friends about you as if you're not sitting across the table from her.
If I squint my eyes I can pretend I'm having lunch with Lindsay Lohan.
After lunch we drove through the adjacent neighborhood and ogled all the huge houses and opulent landscaping. The problem is that afternoon activities like that with the top down are exactly why I don't want to get rid of my car.
We had talked about continuing our car shopping but instead ended up doing this all afternoon:
It enraged Heather that I was better at pool than her but then I kept scratching on the 8 so she would get to victory dance by default. Then I would call her Minnesota Fats and she would get mad that I was calling her fat. For your reference Heather:
Of course, she only won by default. Well, we ended up playing a tie breaker final game but neither of us can remember who won that one. Which means we will have to have a rematch.
As it was though we had already overstayed our welcome. In fact, I literally just remembered that I got a parking ticket last night for overstaying my meter which I had completely forgotten about. Both the meter and the subsequent ticket.
I guess this was the start of our slow descent in to madness. The rest of the evening is a blur for both of us. We have been piecing together the evening all morning now, which is why I'm kind of amazed that I am still remembering things I forgot like the parking ticket.
Of all the things I forgot though, finding these pictures on my phone were really the highlight of my morning:
Neither of us remember this dance party at all. It must have been before we decided to go back out. Our intention was to walk across the bridge and go to the strip club but of course things got complicated. Just after we had passed by the gate for the drawbridge they started the lights and bells and whatnot to say that the bridge was going to go up. Since we had already passed the gate and they hadn't even started to go down yet I decided to just walk briskly to the other side. Heather decided to stop and begin furiously booty dancing. Why? I don't know.
So I ended up having to wait on the other side of the bridge for her. When we finally reconnected she kept trying to tell me that the bridge attendant was yelling at me for crossing the bridge and I kept trying to explain that he was yelling at her to get off the bridge and stop booty dancing. It wasn't until this morning that she finally acknowledged that she didn't realize she was past the gate and that he was in fact yelling at her to stop dancing.
After all this we somehow ended up here because Heather desperately needed meatballs. All I remember is looking down at a half eaten plate of meatballs underneath crazy flashing neon lights and thinking, "where am I, and how did I get here?"
We never ended up at the stip club but it was still an excellent way to spend a tuesday evening. When we got back home I promptly went to sleep but Heather stayed up until the wee hours of the morning chatting with a handsome man. I was not surprised.

my beach cruiser
I keep having annoying situations present themselves in which I am handicapped by my tiny tiny car. The more it happens the more I think about looking for something a little more practical.
But then there are those perfect days when I take it to the beach and wonder how I could ever think of giving up such a fun car. The other day when I took Heather to get her windows tinted I asked the guys in the garage if they worked on bmws and they were like, "That's your car?! That's an awesome car, you better not be selling it". Not that they were offering to buy it but I do get at least one person a month who does ask me if they can buy it. My instinct is always to say no and protect my precious baby but then later I think, 'I should have seen how much they would have paid'.
I can't sell it though! I just need to find a friend with a big car who can drive stick shift and doesn't mind trading with me every now and then.
Cause I can't give up drives home like this:

one year ago
I can't believe today is the year anniversary of me leaving nyc.
I can't decide how I feel about it. I'm pretty happy with the way things have turned out down here but I do miss the big city and all my friends.
Is my blog more or less interesting since I left nyc? Somebody told me that leaving new york was a mistake because I wouldn't be able to find things to stimulate me down here. I did do two entire posts about some birds on the side of the road...
Haha speaking of my blog I was talking with a friend and I mentioned my blog and he said, "oh yeah I saw something about that on facebook, what's it called, the adventures of a cat?" I LOVE THAT NAME! I kind of want to change my blog to that. But not yet, I'm pretty excited about getting my first full year of blog posts under my belt. Only a few days to go!
But for today I'm headed to work where I will be reflecting on my crazy year and how much more fun it is to drive a bmw convertible to work instead of taking the 6 train, among other perks of living in south florida.

come for a ride with me
It's been a long couple of days. I have a feeling today will be the longest, we'll see.
Yesterday afternoon I could feel myself reaching the breaking point so I dropped the top and went for a drive.
I went the usual route, down longboat key, stopping at bradenton beach to watch the sunset.
I even took a video of the drive over one of my favorite bridges but it seems you all will not get to witness it as I can't seem to get it to upload to my blog. It's probably for the best as I held the camera above the windshield to try and give the best view possible, not realizing that the sound of the wind was going to be deafening.
Next time I'll be better prepared. And from the way things have been going, next time might be in a few hours so stay tuned.

An early morning visitor
I heard something larger and slower than a squirrel crashing through the brush beyond the back yard and wondered what it could be. I was not expecting to see this handsome little guy poking around the orange trees.
He didn't want to come over to me and the grass was still too wet for me to want to go over to him so I just watched him while he walked around the backyard at his leisure, made some poops, and then continued on his way.
I hope I can look forward to more pop ins from him in the future.
It's nice to spend the morning so peacefully, I have a big day ahead of me today. My grandfather is coming home! I am excited but also nervous to see how things go.
I spent all day yesterday getting things in order around the house. I'm probably not going to be driving my car for a while so I washed it and waxed it yesterday to what I think you'll agree is a mirror-like finish:
You could put on your make up in that door!
It's also become winter in the past few days and since I only brought t-shirts and shorts up in September I decided to pick up a few fall essentials. I ended up basically getting items that were as close as I could get to my favorite things Jon wears.
I was trying to take a picture of the result to show him when that greedy camera hog had to get in on the action:
It made me realize though that I really don't have very many pictures of me and kitty together which makes me sad. I guess the problem is just that it's hard to finagle him in to a position for a picture so I usually just end up chasing him around with my phone. But, I'm always up for a challenge, so you can look forward to more pictures of us together in the future. .
Hopefully.
For now though, I've got to go get my grandfather!

somebody has good taste
The guy in the red one flew past my car initially but quickly braked and then reversed in to that spot next to me. I've seen a few of my car in traffic but this was the first real life encounter I've had.
It was kind of weird but overall not a bad experience. There was lots of hemming and hawing over gas mileage and idiosyncrasies of the vehicle. Apparently he gets on average like 3 miles more to the gallon than I get, and he claimed that he drove it aggressively while I try to drive responsibly when I can.
Now I'm always on the lookout for this foxy red version of my car, if it weren't for the older gentleman who drives it we would be just like this:
Except I guess these aren't the same cars, and I would want to be Famke...so it's not really like that at all, I just wanted an excuse to post that clip.

omggggg so exciteddddd
It's like it never got smashed by an angry youth in a Ford Ranger!
When I asked about the damage to my rims she said they were sending it to a tire specialist which I was skeptical of at first. I have been proven wrong however, the wheels look fantastic. And not just this wheel, they cleaned all four of my wheels and put all kinds of shiny product on them. I love how much depth it gives them when they're cleaned up all nice. And however they filled in the scratches seems to be flawless as I can't even tell where they were.
I apparently have to wait for them to return my car to the body shop so they can "clean it up" before they give it back to me which seems silly. Besides the fact that I had just detailed it not but a couple hours before it got smashed it looks like the wheel person and the BMW people cleaned it as well.
I'm hoping that they won't drag this on any longer than it's gone on. All I wanted to do in Ft. Lauderdale was drive down A1A with my ragtop down so all the girlies would see me fly by. Is that so much to ask?
I'm glad I snuck in to the lot this morning to see my car by myself so I don't have to deal with the awkwardness of inspecting it while the mechanic is hovering over my shoulder. Now I can just grab the keys and go baby go.
